A local phrase aptly says, “The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain.” The Leshan giant Buddha is an imposing figure, enthroned in a sheer cliff face. The statue was built in the 8th century to calm the waters flowing past it’s feet. Even seated, this is the largest Buddha statue in the world and is 223 feet tall. The designer, Hai Tong, built in an inventive drainage system that keeps the statue from eroding. Visitors can see the Leshan Buddha from the base, or climb to a platform at ear level. Shanghai is the largest city by population in China and the largest city proper in the world. Once a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to its favorable port location and was one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking.

The city then flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became the undisputed financial hub of the Asia Pacific in the 1930s.
