This map shows Keriya / Yutian County, one of seven counties in the Hotan Prefecture in southern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China.
– Here see a road map of Keriya / Yutian County.
– Here see an outline map with the names of the counties in Hotan Prefecture.
– Here see a road map of Xinjiang.

The tallest mountain in the Kunlun Mountains proper* is the Kunlun Goddess or Liushi Shan, 35° 19′ N; 80° 55′ E. See a topographic map of the Kunlun Goddess / Liushi Shan.

On 20 March 2008, a 7.3 magnitude quake hit southern Keriya / Yutian County. At this Wikimapia map see "the epicenter … located at 35.6 degrees north latitude and 81.6 degrees east longitude. The strongest jolt, also the earliest one, occurred at 6:33 am." (Xinhua News Agency).

The USGS further refined the location of the 20 March 2008 quake to 35.445°N, 81.392°E. This location is deep in the Kunlun Mountains, which are the border between Xinjiang and Tibet / Xizang. This is about 225 km southeast of the city of Hotan.

This location, which the USGS says has an uncertainly of "horizontal +/- 6.6 km (4.1 miles)" still places the epicenter very near the Kunlun Goddess / Liushi Shan, the highest peak in the Kunlun Mountains proper.*

At the Wikipedia map, linked above, pull back on the map to 50 miles / 100 kilometers and you will see the Hotan oasis and the Keriya/Yutian oasis, located on the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert.

The Xinhua News Agency further said "The towns of Aqqan and Bostan, with a combined population of 13,400, were affected." China’s state-run television channel, CCTV, said that some houses had collapsed, but that no one was hurt.

On 22-Mar, Xinhua reported more information: The quake "affect[ed] 44,000 people, but no casualties reported. … Four houses in Pulu, the nearest village to the epicenter in the sparsely-inhabited Kunlun Mountain region, collapsed during the first tremor, but the residents escaped. … Meanwhile, about 2,200 houses were damaged or flattened in counties of Yutian, Qira and Lop in southern Xinjiang’s Hotan Prefecture during the quakes, which also toppled hundreds of livestock sheds and vegetable greenhouses, a spokesman with the regional Department of Civil Affairs said. Direct economic losses were estimated at about 10 million yuan (1.4 million U.S. dollars)."

On 27 March 2008 the Xinhua News Agency reported: Strong quakes result in 300 million yuan loss in China’s Xinjiang region. "A series of earthquakes that rocked northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last week cost direct economic losses of almost 300 million yuan (42 million U.S. dollars), local authorities said on Thursday. The quakes affected 97,603 people in the counties of Yutian, Qira and Lop in southern Xinjiang’s Hotan Prefecture, said an official with the regional Department of Civil Affairs. More than 30,000 houses were damaged, 2,363 were flattened and 25,000 needed to be rebuild, the official said. The quakes also toppled 1,251 greenhouses and farming establishments, destroyed 2,311 meters of road and 11,840 meters of water pipelines. Meanwhile, clinics, bridges, penstocks and power supply stations were also damaged, the official said. More than 10 million yuan had been allocated by the regional government since the first quake and 86,000 people had joined the rescue operation. The stricken area had received more than 2,000 tents, 50 tons of coal and about 200 tons of food. Quilts, coats and shoes had also arrived. "

You can see the location of the town of Aqqan (also spelled Atchan, 啊羗 a-qiang), Pulu (普鲁村 pu-lu can – village), and Bostan (博斯坦 bo-si-tan), just west in neighboring Chira / Cele County) on this road map of Keriya / Yutian County.

There is also a separate Yutian County in another province of China.

* Two taller peaks, west near the border of Tajikistan, are now more properly considered part of the neighboring Pamir Mountain range or in their own sub-range, the Kungur Range, rather than in the Kunlun Mountains. Another taller peak, Ulugh Muztagh, is also in a separate mountain range, the Akka Tagh, though just to the south of the Kunlun Mountains.

American journalist who claim america is the one and only super power are mistaken, in my opinion. I once felt that china and the u.S. Would do battle. No longer do i hold such ideas. We are two nations who have too much to lose, thus we most certainly share this opinion in a cold war kind of mutually assured destruction treaty, albeit unsigned, unregistered or formalized. For awhile, i was concerned about our carriers being destroyed, but when i saw this most major project, i knew we were both super powers.

The program of economic reforms initiated in China in 1978 by Deng Xiaoping aimed to finance the modernization of the nation. But what Communist Party leaders called “Socialism with Chinese characteristics” looked suspiciously to many as a return to capitalism. Today, some three decades later, the results of those sweeping economic reforms have become plainly visible in a country increasingly divided between its rural and urban sectors.
Filmed in five different regions of China, UMBRELLA provides a telling look at the vast changes that have taken place in Chinese society, including a massive migration from the countryside to the cities, the rise of a prosperous new class of businesspeople, millions of new college graduates competing for a shrinking number of jobs, and the neglect of China’s largest population group, its rural peasants.
Filmed in a purely observational style, with no narration or commentary, UMBRELLA shows the workaday life of young employees in a factory in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, where they engage in monotonous, endlessly and rapidly repeated routines to manufacture umbrellas, for which they are paid a meager piece rate. At a massive shopping mall, the “World’s Largest Small Commodity Market,” in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, those multicolored, multipatterned umbrellas are sold at much higher prices by wholesale merchants, who are among China’s nouveaux riche.
The film also shows throngs of young people filling out applications at a job fair in Shanghai or undergoing physical drills and ideological regimentation at a provincial garrison of the People’s Liberation Army. Finally, on a farm in Luoyang, Henan Province, we watch a group of elderly farmers struggle to salvage a premature harvest of drought-impacted wheat.
UMBRELLA makes sadly apparent the old adage about “the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer,” with China’s peasant farmers, who are struggling to survive amidst the combined forces of globalization and the new Chinese economy, bearing the brunt of the country’s growing pains.
“Fascinating, if brutally depressing. It paints a decidedly different picture than the Chinese government would want you to believe.”—Jeffrey M. Anderson, Combustible Celluloid
“In creating a vast societal portrait through his focus on umbrellas, Du pulls off the rare feat of capturing the ephemeral.”—Jennique Mason, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Du Haibin was born in Baoji City in Shanxi Province in China. He studied painting from childhood. In 1993 he studied Painting and Photography at the Beijing Central Academy of Arts. In 1996 he entered Beijing Film Academy in the Photography department. In 1998 he started documentary filmmaking and creative photography work. Du Haibin has made numerous feature documentaries and two fiction films.

Wuhan has a distinguished history from the days before China was unified, and it was the starting point of the revolution that overthrew the last emperor of China. Now it is a large university town with a population of almost 10 million; the city is moving up (literally), and it is poised to become a center of growth for optical technology.

You can walk from Shenzen, China to Hong Kong on a covered bridge. From 1950 to 1967, Hong Kong’s had explosive population growth, from 2.3 million to close to 4 million people, due to immigration largely from mainland China.

This is the third in a series that I am currently still working on. I really liked the way the previous drawing about India came out and wanted to do the same treatment to China.

I represented the current economic and industrial side of China with the dollar bill and the mech warrior robot toy I bought at the dollar store. To represent the rich history of China I included the Chinese spear and the picture of Mao Zedong. I think this piece was even more visually striking that the previous one dealing with the Indian subcontinent.

Veneto vs. China 1991-2005

The relationship between China and Veneto can be traced back to the voyage of Marco Polo in Cathay and his famous encounter with the Gran Khan, in the 13th century. That period was marked by economic and cultural prosperity both for the Chinese Empire and for "La Serenissima". It was also the starting point for a long history of commercial relations. Today the Asian giant and the industrious Italian region are big economic partners with exchanges of around two millions euros per year. Despite the reciprocal advantages represented by this strong commercial tie in the last 15 years Veneto economy has begun to suffer from the competition launched by China enterprises in vital sectors such as textiles and small machineries. At the begin of the 90s the Chinese Communist Party had launched a "socialist market economy" and began competing with Veneto at the level of exports. Along the years China has more and more been profiting from its almost infinite source of cheap labour and from the imitation of European and Italian products.
